Does It Really Matter??

I was wondering if workout clothes really make the workout?  After all — I know when I feel good in what I’m wearing, my workout usually benefits from the positive  “mental” attitude I have (or maybe it’s just the mental picture I have in my mind thinking I look like J-Lo.  We’re twins you know!!!).  Now, I don’t go to the extremes that the Ecard above states . . . I’m too old to care.  I don’t care if my legs need shaving and it doesn’t pay to do my hair or make-up because I will sweat that off in 15 minutes.  I’m not there to impress anyone . . . I’m there to have great time and to SWEAT my tush off — literally!

BUT – as I continue to workout — I do notice that if I put a workout outfit on that I feel “good, pretty, slender, hot, etc. in . . . my energy soars and I have a remarkable workout!  And the opposite is true as well.  When I can’t find an outfit and I’m running out of time and throw anything on — especially clothes that I’ve painted the house in and have paint splattered all over them, or little holes in them, or too baggy or too tight — my workout suffers.

I was wondering if this is normal so I researched it.  I found many articles supporting this theory of mine.  The Right Exercise Clothes Can Improve Your Workout is an article from www.imetobolic.com.  It supports my theory that clothes can make the workout.  An article in Glamour Magazine supports this theory as well.

I decided to put this theory to the test.  I don’t own any clothing from Zumba for a couple of reasons.  First of all, I feel I’m too old to be wearing that type of clothing and secondly, I can’t afford it.  So I went in search for clothing on line that I feel would look good on an older woman.  I came across this really terrific website called ActivewearUSA.com.  Their clothing is AMAZING!  I decided to reach out to them and ask them if they would consider sending me an article of their clothing in return for a story written about it.  I received a response saying they would and asked me all kinds of relevant questions.  They matched a piece of clothing to my tastes and needs.

This is what they sent me.  How did they know that this is exactly the piece of  clothing I wanted!!!  I never gave them a stock number, I just told them what I like!!!  I tried them on and they fit, except for the fact that were made for a 6 foot tall woman.  I had to hem them.  The quality of the pants were superb!  I had to put them to the test.

They fit well, they moved well, they were extremely comfortable and they did they job!  I had a great workout!!!  And — they launder well too.  No shrinkage, no fading, no ironing!!!

Does The Price of Workout Clothes Make for a Better Workout?

Honestly, I’m not sure.  I would hope not.  I was thrilled to death to find ActivewearUSA.  Their clothes are funky, original, fun and GORGEOUS!!!  Maybe everyone should own at least one piece of workout clothes that they have to “stretch” for.  They even sell the Zumba Brand line of clothing as well!

I will always continue to check the  clearance section of my favorite workout clothes sites like Activewear USA and Zumba and I will continue to buy workout clothes from the clearance racks at sporting good stores, Target, other major retailers, thrift stores, hand-me-downs, etc.  That’s just who I am.  My main objective is SWEATING — and getting my heartbeat up and having a truly fun workout!

“For you see, it’s not what you look like and the clothes you wear while you work out.  It’s what you look like and the clothes you wear AFTER YOUR WORKOUT!  Results baby!!!!”

And you can quote me on that!!!!  Those are MY words coming straight from MY heart!!!

So whatever you wear, whatever workout you love the most — the most important thing is that you

Workout Wednesday — Walk At Home w/ Leslie Sanson

Way before I started changing my life by eliminating the foods that caused inflammation in my gut and joints — exercise ALWAYS played an important part of my daily routine!  Even when I was chunky and in pain — I always felt that “moving” and “sweating” was a major part of my life.  Even during two pregnancies — I always worked out!   Both my parents were diagnosed with very different debilitating health conditions at relatively young ages, and I was determined to change my gene pool, if that was possible.

Back in 2008, with my hectic schedule, I found Leslie Sansone and her Walk at Home Program.  The convenience of having DVD’s in your home allows you to work out whenever you have some extra time.   I ordered a 2-mile “senior” walk, figuring that if “seniors” could do it . . . so could I!  Well — I was wrong.  Even though walking was my general form of exercise up-to-that point, Leslie used different steps, moves and muscles which added to the intensity of the workout!  Within 10 minutes, I was huffing and puffing and sweating.  It took me some time and some diligence, but I worked my way up to a 5-mile walk with weights and workout bands!

Not everyone can find the time to get to a gym or can  afford a gym membership.  Maybe classes don’t coincide with your schedule.  Or maybe you just want to work out in ripped shorts and an over-sized tee shirt!  Whatever the reason is — I find at home DVD’s are a great way to get your body off the couch and get moving and sweating!

Working out — even lightly for 20 minutes, kicks your endorphin’s into gear and makes you feel so much better, healthy, positive and light,  PLUS sweating aids in detoxing the body.  However, before starting any workout program, make sure to discuss it with your doctor for approval.   Make sure the program you choose is fun for you so you don’t get bored and once you do, the only thing left to do is . . .

Loving Those “Love Handles”

Such adorable, loving names for a condition that may plague many of us.  Personally speaking, it does not matter how much I work out . . . even though my “love handles” may be shrinking – they’re not shrinking fast enough.  Blame it on age (okay — I will), blame it on not working out hard enough (okay — I’ll do that too), blame it on not targeting the right spot; blame it on not giving up my sweets (even though they’re all raw and healthy) — love handles or muffin tops (I don’t even eat muffins) are one tough cookie to crumble . . . one tough egg to crack (love these food analogies)!

I was sitting at my computer last week wondering “what would be the best exercises to do for muffin top”?  So I googled it.  The computer came up with quite a few pages on this topic, but I didn’t want to do Boot Camp or anything extremely strenuous.  That’s how I found Trainer Josh!!   The shortlink was called “10 Best Exercises to Lose Love Handles Fast”.  Something about that title made me want to check it out more closely.  I’m glad I did.

First of all — his logo is animated which strangely made me think that perhaps the exercises are a little more doable for someone like me.  Don’t ask me why I think that way – I just do.  And second of all — when I watched his video, I realized that I probably can do his exercises and I also knew at that moment, that I would be sharing this workout on my Blog.   I knew that this would be a great site to share on “Workout Wednesday”.

If you’re like me and just want to reduce what may spill over the top of your jeans, then maybe watching Trainer Josh’s video is just for you as well.  No gym memberships required.  Just your trusty PC in the privacy of your own home.  Even if you don’t have the dreaded muffin top, it looks to me as if these exercises will also help you achieve some nice rock-hard abs!  For whatever reason you may choose to do these exercises, the only thing that I ever will recommend is that you . . .

Workout Wednesday

Men Sweat – Women “Glisten” . . . NOT!!!!!

I’m a huge advocate of working out, getting moving and sweating — at any fitness level from none to some to expert!!  Exercise improves mood, increases energy and stamina, reduces stress, helps aid in alleviating depression, helps control weight, promotes better sleep, improves ones sex life, and if you find the right type of exercise that you enjoy — it can be fun!!  Try different types of exercises and see what you enjoy doing the most.

Mostly, my workouts comprise of “moving”; not “lifting” or “straining”.   That works best for me.   However, sometimes I just want to “switch it up”, so I don’t get bored.  I read an article on a Blog about a year ago about this  workout technique called “Tabata“.  do-your-tabatas It’s a 4 minute workout at 20 seconds intense training and 10 seconds of rest.   I thought this sounded fascinating!  I could give up 4 minutes of my life every day!   So I continued to google it (I’m going to change my name to Google Goot), and that’s when I found videos made by Rebekah Boruki who started a Website,  Blog and Vlog called “BexLife“.

I immediately liked her method of teaching and her expertise.  She’s not intimidating.  She does not yell in your face — quite the opposite as a matter-of-fact and she performs the workouts for you as a guide.  I signed up right away for her videos.  I’m attaching one or two of her “Tabata” training for you to watch.  I’ll share a couple of different ones  to watch and maybe try!  In all fairness to you, I should let you know that I haven’t tried these  yet — but it’s on my list of things to do.

Bex has come a long way in the short time that I signed up for these videos.  Originally, a yoga instructor and mother of 4, she has blossomed into a Spokesperson, Model and now TV personality.  I love watching her grow.

Now Bex has started a new series on Learning How to Meditate.  Once again, she’s peeked my curiosity.  How does one teach Meditation?  Don’t you have to be quiet to meditate?  I watched the first one, then the second.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and even did it with her.  Four minutes — that’s all she asks.  And four minutes seems to be Bex’s recurring theme whether it be for workouts or for meditation.  As I said before, everyone can find 4 minutes!!!

Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just going to take your first step to health and wellness, find something you like, or try many different workout routines.  The main thing is that you just . . .

The “Magic Elixer”

I Am My Own Science Experiment

Before I recommend anything,  I need to try it out first and make sure that it does what it’s supposed to be doing.  I tried the Paleo Diet and Raw Living, before I would even recommend it to anyone.  I saw changes in myself and my health and so did people that I would come in to contact who knew me prior to making the changes.  My arthritic pain is gone and my stamina and energy are off the charts.  People want to know what I’m doing, so that’s how this blog was born!  Do I recommend eliminating foods in your diet that make you ill!  Yes!  How do I know?  Because I was my own science experiment.  And it works!

Once my pain was gone and my energy increased, so did my workouts!  And I worried about that.  I worried if I was eating enough calories to sustain me during my workouts.  And I worried if I would be able to recover well after my workouts.  But even though I had increased energy — by 4:00 p.m. I was usually zonked.  I wake up every morning around 5:15 so that’s almost 12 hours of being awake and on the go!  And my Zumba class is at 7:00 p.m.!  HELP!!  How am I going to do this?  I’d brew some tea and hope the caffeine would wake me up.  Sometimes it did — most times it did not.

And Then I Found It . . . . .

Just like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz,  I had the answer in the palm of my hands the whole time!!!  All I had to do was “click my sneakers” together and say, “I want more strength, I want more strength”!  And “Poof”!  I got more strength!   Okay — not really.  But almost!! It seems that one of the books that I’m constantly recommending had the answer in it all the whole time!!!  Ani Phyo had the explanation and the answer that I was looking for.

Ani explained that for optimal energy, you need to pair sugars with fats 20 minutes before you exercise.  This is the most important lesson I needed to learn.

She goes on to say that you should eat higher sugar, higher calorie fruits (dates, bananas, plums, pears, pineapple, orange, mango) with a fat source (nuts, seeds or nut butters, coconut oil, or coconut milk) for longer, sustained energy.  Try to eat these sugars 20 minutes prior to a workout for a longer performance.    She then goes on to recommend that you add green tea or cocoa because the caffeine inside both of these are a known physical performance booster (but don’t overdo it — you’ll blow out your adrenals).  She also recommends other tips for maximizing endurance and energy, but we can touch on those another time.

So the point of all of this leads me to this . . .  what I’m now calling “The Magic Elixer”.    And how do I know it’s a Magic Elixer?  Because I am the science experiment who’s been trying this out for about 5 weeks now AND IT WORKS!!   My stamina and recovery have been unsurpassed!!!

Here’s the recipe for Ani Phyo’s Banana, Spinach, Chocolate Power Smoothie now known as my “Magic Elixer”!

2 cups bananas, from about 2 whole (I use 1 – 1 1/2 bananas)

1 cup spinach leaves, washed well (I use Kale)

1/4 cup almond butter, raw (I use 1/2 cup almonds)

1 tablespoon cacao powder

1 teaspoon spirulina powder (or wheat grass powder)

3 cups Thai baby coconut water, or filtered water

1 cup ice, optional

Place all ingredients, except ice, into a high-speed blender.  Blend until smooth.  Add ice, if using, and blend to mix well.  Enjoy immediately.

Ani Phyo’s Banana, Spinach, Chocolate Power Smoothie

Will keep for 1 day, sealed tightly, in the fridge.

* A note from me . . .

Ani recommends doing this 20 minutes before a workout.  I recommend drinking it at least an hour before so it will be settled in your stomach and you don’t feel sick.

I can’t stress the importance of the above smoothie recipe if anyone wants to “up their game”.  I started drinking this an hour before my workout and found my endurance to be off the charts.  The science experiment worked!!!  I feel like I know a dirty little secret – especially when I hear people around me saying things like “they’re off their game today”, or “they’re just out of it today” and here I am — ready and willing to keep going! I knew it was time to share it.   I totally recommend that everyone who works out, include this recipe in your diet!  I also highly recommend drinking water before and during your workouts to keep hydrated.

The Secret To Staying Healthy

Cause:  Working Out . . . Effect:  Sweating  = Good Thing!

I always worked out.  Even during both of my pregnancies.  Growing up, we had PE (Physical Education) every single day.  Not like today’s society, where PE is an “elective”.   And after school — we were sent outside to play.

I grew up in an environment where there was  a playground right outside my door.  We’d run around, ride bikes, roller skate (not blade, mind you, but actually skate), we’d play sports . . . punch ball was a great “Brooklyn” sport, baseball, paddle ball, tag, jump rope, catch, dodge ball — whatever it was — we entertained ourselves by being active!!  We came home in time for dinner and then did our homework in the evening.

However, sometime in the ’70’s everything changed.  Moms went back to work to help support the family.  Dinners were frozen and popped into a toaster oven for convenience.  Snacks were cookies, chips, candy and Hostess cupcakes.  My mother did not go back to work and she did cook a meal every night.  That usually consisted of 1/2 grapefruit as an appetizer, some meat, chicken or fish, canned colorless mushy vegetables and then canned fruit for dessert.  I don’t remember ever getting a salad.  Lettuce and tomatoes and onions were saved for sandwiches or hamburgers.  As time went on, Mom bought frozen vegetables which were so much better than the canned stuff — but she really did boil the life out of them!  Burger King, McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken popped up in my neighborhood.  Immediate gratification became the norm.  Had a craving?  Squelch it with “fast food”.

But I digress.  I really wanted to talk about the importance of “Sweating” . . working out.  I always worked out.  Sometimes I maintained a decent weight — but most of the time I didn’t.  As I’ve always said, “If I didn’t work so hard at staying ‘chunky’, I would be obese!”  When when I hit 50 — the pain in my knees got so bad.  I associated that pain with getting older and too much working out whether it be 4 miles on the treadmill or Walking AT Home with Leslie Sansone.  I figured the severe pain I felt in my knees must be from the “jarring” they’re enduring from my workouts.

About the same time, I tried Zumba.  I loved it!  It was fun and exciting.  However,  after 15 minutes of doing this, I couldn’t breathe, I was beat red, the sweat was pouring out of me, I’d need a break – a sip of water, wipe the sweat away and go back to the class.  Twenty minutes later, I’d need another break.  Same thing . . . can’t breath, etc.  I just told myself that I’m not used to the fast pace and if I keep at this and get really good at this — I won’t need the breaks anymore.

That never happened . . .

I changed my diet 3 years later.  

Once I eliminated wheat, grains, soy, dairy, legumes, peanuts and alcohol (First through The Paleo Diet and now through eating RAW) – my arthritic pain disappeared (within 3 days) and my stamina and endurance prevailed!  My Migraines totally disappeared.  I suffered with Migraines my whole life!  I can now do 1 full hour of Zumba – 4 times a week plus I’ve done 2 hour Master Classes and I can do 4-5 miles of Leslie Sansone’s Walk at Home.

If I can do this — so can you.  You will feel so much healthier, better, leaner, lighter, REJUVENATED AND WELL(NESS)!!

I truly believe in working up a good (great) sweat!  Sweating is great for you!  I will be dedicating a lot of discussions to different avenues of working out and will have guest bloggers who specialize in different types of workouts.  I have wonderful hints, tips and recipes to post for you.  Stay tuned for those.  It’s so exciting!
